A sample day at 18 months
Here is what the planner gives an 18 month old who wakes at 7:00 am, on a day without surprises:
Wake 7:00 am · Nap 12:15–2:15 pm · Bedtime 7:35 pm
A long morning, lunch, a two-hour nap, and an afternoon of just over five hours before bed. That shape lines up with most daycare rest times too. If your toddler wakes at 6:00, the nap moves toward 11:15 am, and bedtime stays at 7 pm, the earliest the planner goes at this age. In the planner above, log the nap when it happens; if it runs long, it tells you when to wake your toddler to keep bedtime where it is.
What changes at 18 months
One nap, settled. By 18 months most toddlers have made the move from two naps to one. If yours made it recently, the single nap may still be short some days; an earlier bedtime covers it. If your 18 month old still takes two naps and sleeps well at night, that's fine too, but watch for bedtime drifting late: that is usually the sign the second nap has had its day. The 13–17 month page walks through the switch.
Ending the nap on time. With windows of 5–6 hours, a nap that runs until 4 pm pushes bedtime toward 9. Try to have the nap over by about 3:30 pm. If your toddler is still asleep then, waking them gently is fine; the planner shows the latest wake-up that keeps bedtime on track. A nap that starts late, after a busy morning out, can be shortened rather than skipped.
The 18-month regression. Around 18 months a lot of toddlers who slept well start fighting bedtime, stalling with one more book, one more drink, or calling out after lights-out. It comes with a big jump in independence (the “no!” phase), a growing understanding that you are somewhere else when you leave, and teeth: the NHS puts the canines at around 18 months and the second molars at around 2 years. What helps:
- Choices inside the routine: which pajamas, which book, which cup. Lots of small yeses make the one big no (bedtime) easier.
- The same limits every night: the routine ends at the same point whatever the protest. Consistency is what makes it short-lived.
- A look at the schedule: a toddler who isn't tired at bedtime may need the nap to end earlier, or bedtime 15–30 minutes later.

Separation, again. The AAP notes that some toddlers who breezed through infancy meet separation anxiety for the first time at 15 or 18 months. A clingy bedtime and calling for you at night can be that, not a schedule problem. A calm, short goodbye works better than staying until they fall asleep one night and leaving the next.
Climbing out, and the toddler bed question. The CDC's milestones by 18 months include walking without holding on, and some toddlers soon put that energy into climbing. Most children move from a crib to a bed somewhere between 18 months and 3 years. According to a Cleveland Clinic pediatrician, there's no harm in keeping a child in the crib as long as it's safe, and the AAP considers a crib outgrown when the child is taller than 35 inches or the rail reaches mid-chest when they stand. If your toddler keeps climbing out, it's time for a bed. Until then, a sleep sack can make climbing harder.
Sleepy cues at 18 months, and when they disagree with the clock
- Early cues: going quiet, fetching the comfort object, lying down on the floor, losing interest in play.
- Late cues: rubbing the eyes, clumsiness, whining, short temper.
- Overtired: tantrums over nothing, running around wildly, taking a long time to fall asleep.
At this age the clock does most of the work. Toddlers rarely look tired until they are very tired, so plan the nap from the wake-up time and use the cues to move it by 15 minutes, not an hour.
Born early?
Pediatricians use adjusted age until about 2 years. A toddler born 6 weeks early who is 18 months old today sleeps more like a 16½ month old, so a second nap on some days may still help. The planner does the math if you tap “Born more than 3 weeks early?”; here is how adjusted age works.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an 18 month old be awake before bed?
About 5 to 6 hours after the nap ends. With a nap ending at 2:15 pm, a bedtime around 7:30 pm is typical. If your toddler lies awake for a long time at bedtime, the window is probably too short; if they fall apart at dinner, it's too long.
My 18 month old refuses the nap. What should I do?
Keep offering it at the usual time for about 45 minutes of quiet in a dark room. A few days of refusing is common around 18 months and usually passes. On a day without a nap, move bedtime earlier, toward 6:30 pm. Most children nap until somewhere between 3 and 5 years.
When should my toddler move to a toddler bed?
Most children move from a crib to a bed between 18 months and 3 years. Keep the crib while it's safe; move when your toddler keeps climbing out, is taller than 35 inches, or the rail reaches mid-chest when they stand.
How long should an 18 month old nap?
Usually 1½ to 2½ hours in one nap after lunch. Try to have it over by about 3:30 pm so bedtime stays easy.
