- Cameras via go2rtc: if your cameras run through go2rtc in Home Assistant or Frigate, Mamoon reads video and sound from it (sound as G.711).
- Camera power: a camera switched off in its app (Tapo privacy mode) or on a smart plug sends nothing. Mamoon writes you an automation with a webhook: it switches the camera on when monitoring starts and, if you want, off when it ends.
- Away from home: through Tailscale, just like your Home Assistant.
A camera from go2rtc or Frigate
go2rtc is a server that unifies streams from different cameras and ships with Home Assistant add-ons and Frigate. In Mamoon, choose a go2rtc server as the source and enter its address and the camera's main and sub stream names. Mamoon then reads the video from go2rtc (RTSP port 8554) just as it would from the camera.
Sound has to arrive as G.711. If your camera sends something else, go2rtc can transcode it.
Switch the camera on when you start watching
Many people keep the camera off during the day, in Tapo's privacy mode or on a smart plug. A switched-off camera sends nothing, and neither RTSP nor ONVIF can switch it on. Mamoon does three things about it:
- It notices. When the camera answers on the network but sends no video, Mamoon says "Offline" and why.
- It switches it on through Home Assistant. Mamoon writes an automation with a webhook for you to paste into Home Assistant. When monitoring starts it switches the camera or plug on, and after "Stop monitoring" off again if you want.
- Without Home Assistant it opens the camera maker's app in one tap.
Mamoon never signs in to the camera maker's cloud. Your Home Assistant does the switching.
Away from home via Tailscale
Mamoon keeps the video on your own network. If you already reach Home Assistant through Tailscale, put Tailscale on your phone too and Mamoon works from work or grandma's, over an encrypted connection.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Home Assistant to use Mamoon?
No. Home Assistant is an option for people who already run it. Mamoon works with an old phone or a Wi-Fi camera directly.
Can Mamoon read Frigate cameras?
Yes, if Frigate exposes the streams through go2rtc. Enter the server address and stream names in Mamoon.
Does Mamoon sign in to my Tapo account?
No, never. It switches the camera only through your Home Assistant automation, or opens the maker's app.
