A baby monitor app for two phones

Two phones make a complete video baby monitor: one stays by the crib, the other comes with you. It doesn't matter whether they're iPhones, Androids or one of each. Here's what works together, how to pair them in a minute, how the whole family can watch, and what it costs.

Updated
In short
  • Any pair works in Mamoon: two iPhones, two Androids, or an iPhone with an Android. The phones speak the same stream, so the mix doesn't matter.
  • Pairing takes a minute: put one phone by the crib, scan the QR code it shows with your own phone. No account, no e-mail, no SIM card in the crib phone.
  • More than two phones: both parents, grandma and an old iPad can all watch the same crib phone. Any of them can become the phone by the crib with one tap.
  • Free for sound and cry alerts, for good. The picture is $29.99 once for life, or $3.99 a month with 14 days free, and only the watching phone pays.
  • No router? Two iPhones connect to each other directly by themselves; with an Android in the pair, use a phone hotspot.

Which two phones work together?

All of them. Mamoon on iPhone and Mamoon on Android send and receive the same video stream, so the phone by the crib and the phone in your hand can be any mix.

Phone by the cribYour phone: iPhoneYour phone: Android
iPhone (XS or newer, iOS 17+)yes, at home and with no router at allyes, on any shared Wi-Fi or a hotspot
Android (8 or newer)yes, on any shared Wi-Fi or a hotspotyes, on any shared Wi-Fi or a hotspot

The only difference is what happens with no Wi-Fi at all. Two iPhones then link directly, the way AirDrop does, with nothing to switch on. Androids need a network to share, and a hotspot on one of the phones is enough. The no-Wi-Fi guide has the details for hotels and trips.

What you need

Pair them in a minute

  1. Install Mamoon on both phones. It's on Google Play now and coming to the App Store.
  2. Put one phone by the crib. Open Mamoon on it and choose By the crib. It starts sending at once and shows a QR code.
  3. Scan the code with your phone. Open Mamoon on your phone and scan the QR code, or type the six-digit code it shows. You need the code only once; after that the phones find each other by themselves.
  4. Place the crib phone. 3–5 feet (1–1.5 m) from the crib, aimed at the mattress, on its charger. The old-phone guide covers the stand, the night light and cord safety.
  5. Choose what should wake you. Only loud crying, Crying and fussing, or Every sound. Then mute the nursery and lock your phone: the alerts still come.
Mamoon is built for exactly this. Two phones in any mix, paired by QR code, and it tells a cry from a dog, a door or the washing machine, right on the phone, so you can sleep through everything else. Sound and cry alerts are free; the picture is $29.99 once. See how Mamoon works.

Two parents, grandma and a tablet: more than two phones

Mamoon treats your phones as one household. Each phone you add can watch the same crib phone, so both parents get the picture and the cry alert on their own phones, and so can a grandparent on the couch or an old iPad on the kitchen counter.

Each parent phone watches one camera at a time. With a Wi-Fi camera in one room and a phone in another, you switch between them from the menu. An old iPad works too, and makes a big bedside screen.

Is there a free baby monitor app for two phones?

For sound, yes. In Mamoon the sound and the cry alerts are free forever, on as many phones as you like, so you can try the whole setup tonight without paying. The picture costs $29.99 once, for life, or $3.99 a month with 14 days free. Only the watching phone pays; the crib phone is always free, and one purchase covers every device on the same Apple or Google account.

To be fair about it: Cloud Baby Monitor ($6.99) and Baby Monitor 3G ($7.99 per platform) are cheaper one-time video apps, and Dormi gives 4 free hours a month on Android. What Mamoon adds is cry detection on the phone itself, Wi-Fi cameras with night vision as the camera, and no account or server. Which monitors need a subscription lists them all.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use two iPhones as a baby monitor?

Install Mamoon on both, open it on the iPhone that stays with the baby and choose By the crib, then scan the QR code it shows with your own iPhone. At home they talk over your Wi-Fi; with no Wi-Fi at all, two iPhones link directly by themselves.

Does a baby monitor app work between an iPhone and an Android?

Mamoon does, in both directions: an Android by the crib and an iPhone in your hand, or the other way around. Baby Monitor 3G, Bibino, Annie and Cloud Baby Monitor also work across platforms; Dormi is Android only.

Is there a free baby monitor app for two phones?

For sound, yes: Mamoon's sound and cry alerts are free forever on any number of phones, and Bibino's audio is free too. Video apps charge something; Mamoon's picture is $29.99 once or $3.99 a month with 14 days free.

Do both phones need the internet?

No. Mamoon sends the video from phone to phone over your Wi-Fi and keeps working with the internet down. Away from Wi-Fi, two iPhones link directly and an Android pair uses a phone hotspot.

Can three or more phones watch the same baby?

Yes. Add every phone to the household (Household → Add a phone), and each one gets the picture and the cry alerts from the same crib phone.

Does the phone by the crib need a SIM card?

No. It needs Wi-Fi, a charger and Mamoon, nothing else. A phone with a cracked screen or a dead SIM slot is perfect.

A video baby monitor you already own

Mamoon turns an old phone or a Wi-Fi camera into a baby monitor. It recognizes a cry by itself, wakes you even with the nursery sound muted, and the picture never leaves your Wi-Fi.
