A eufy security camera as a baby monitor

Partly. A eufy Indoor Cam makes a decent baby monitor inside the eufy Security app, which even detects crying. Outside it, eufy streams a local picture other apps can use, but locks the sound to a format they can't listen to. Here's what that means at 3 a.m., and the two ways around it.

Updated
In short
  • In the eufy Security app, yes: the Indoor Cam 2K has night vision and its own crying detection, with no monthly fee.
  • With a baby monitor app, picture only. eufy's local stream (NAS/RTSP) carries H.264 video but AAC sound, and eufy doesn't let you change it. An app can show the crib but can't hear a cry.
  • The fix: go2rtc, part of Home Assistant and Frigate, converts the sound to G.711, and then it's a full monitor. About an hour if you already run a home server.
  • Battery eufy cameras mostly have no local stream at all. And if you're shopping, a Tapo C200 works out of the box for about $25.

Camera checker:

  • eufy Indoor Cam 2K, eufy Solo IndoorCam C24, eufy Indoor Cam 2K Pan & Tilt, eufyCam 2 (with HomeBase), eufyCam 2C (with HomeBase): Picture only. Mamoon can't hear eufy's sound.
  • Other models: Most other eufy models, the battery ones especially, have no local stream.

"After the fix" means with go2rtc converting the sound. eufy's dedicated baby monitors (E21, C10, SpaceView) are a different product line; they're compared in eufy baby monitor vs Mamoon.

What the eufy Security app already does for a baby

More than most security apps. eufy lists human, pet and crying detection for the Indoor Cam 2K, plus night vision and local recording to a microSD card, with no subscription. If you only want a ping when the baby cries and a look in, the eufy app may be enough on its own.

What it isn't is a night screen. It's a security app: alerts and clips first, live listening second. Whether you're woken by a cry with your phone locked and silenced depends on how your phone treats eufy's notifications; the locked-phone alerts guide explains what to check on any app.

Setting it up with a baby monitor app

With a home server running go2rtc (Home Assistant or Frigate), this is the route to full sound:

  1. Turn on the stream: eufy Security app › camera › ⚙ › Storage › NAS (RTSP Stream) → on; set a name and password. The app shows the RTSP address.
  2. Convert the sound with go2rtc (Home Assistant or Frigate). eufy fixes the audio at AAC, so add the stream with the sound converted: nursery: ffmpeg:rtsp://USER:PASS@CAMERA-IP/live0#video=copy#audio=pcma
  3. In Mamoon choose “go2rtc server” and enter rtsp://SERVER-IP:8554/nursery.

Without go2rtc, Mamoon shows the picture and, after about 20 seconds without usable sound, says Offline instead of pretending to listen.

Battery cameras sleep between events to save power and don't offer a stream another app can watch all night.

Without a home server

Put an old phone by the crib and let it do the listening in Mamoon; keep the eufy's infrared picture in the eufy Security app. Mamoon watches one source at a time, so it watches the phone.

Good to know

Night vision and placement

All eufy indoor cameras switch to infrared in the dark. The Indoor Cam 2K Pan & Tilt turns from Mamoon over ONVIF; the plain Indoor Cam 2K is fixed, so frame the whole crib from a shelf 3–6 feet away, with the cord at least 3 feet from the crib. More in where to put the camera.

Where Mamoon fits: Mamoon shows the picture but won't pretend to listen: after about 20 seconds it says Offline. With go2rtc converting the sound, it's a full monitor. No home server? An old phone by the crib does the listening tonight, and your eufy Indoor Cam 2K keeps watching the rest of the house.

Two-way talk and recordings stay in the maker's app either way, and go2rtc means a computer that stays on all night.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a eufy security camera as a baby monitor?

In the eufy Security app, yes: the Indoor Cam 2K has night vision and crying detection with no subscription. With a separate baby monitor app, eufy gives only the picture, because its local stream's sound is AAC and can't be switched.

Does the eufy Indoor Cam 2K detect a baby crying?

Yes, eufy lists crying detection among its AI features, alongside human and pet detection. It runs in the eufy Security app.

Why does a baby monitor app show my eufy's picture but not hear it?

eufy's NAS (RTSP) stream sends AAC sound, and a monitor app needs G.711 to analyze crying in real time. Mamoon shows the picture and, after about 20 seconds, says Offline rather than pretending to listen. go2rtc can convert the sound.

Do battery eufyCams work as a baby monitor?

The eufyCam 2 and 2C stream through their HomeBase, picture only, like the Indoor Cam. Most other battery eufy cameras have no local stream, because they sleep between motion events.

A video baby monitor you already own

Mamoon turns an old phone or a Wi-Fi camera into a baby monitor. It recognizes a cry by itself, wakes you even with the nursery sound muted, and the picture never leaves your Wi-Fi.
