Tapo C200, C210 or C220 as a baby monitor

Yes, you can. The pan-and-tilt Tapos are the easiest Wi-Fi cameras to turn into a baby monitor: they see in the dark, turn to follow the baby, detect crying on their own, and let another app watch them after one setting. Here's which one to pick and what to tap.

In short
  • Yes, every wired pan-and-tilt Tapo works as a baby monitor: C200, C210, C211, C212, C220 and C225. They all have infrared night vision, a microphone and a local stream.
  • Which one: the C200 (about $25–35) is the value pick; the C210 (a little more) and C220 add a sharper 2K picture; the C225 adds a physical privacy button. The C200 and C210 connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.
  • The Tapo app alone gives you live view, two-way talk and free on-camera cry detection. What it doesn't do: keep listening once your phone's screen is off, tell crying from fussing, or warn you when the camera drops out.
  • The one setting: a Camera Account in the Tapo app. Then a baby monitor app like Mamoon finds the camera on your Wi-Fi and listens for crying on your phone, all night, with the sound muted.

All six behave the same with a baby monitor app: the picture, the sound and pan and tilt come over your Wi-Fi. The table is what the camera checker says for each one.

What the Tapo app already does for a baby

Quite a lot, for free. You get live view with night vision, two-way talk, pan and tilt, recording to a microSD card, and on these models a baby crying detection that runs on the camera and sends a notification, no subscription needed. You can also look in from anywhere, because the Tapo app goes through TP-Link's servers when you're away from home.

What it's not built for is the night shift. TP-Link's own moderator wrote that the app process closes when the phone's screen is off and that there's no audio-only mode, so you can't simply lie down and listen. Its cry detection fires on crying or it doesn't; there's no crying-versus-fussing level. And when the camera drops off the Wi-Fi, a frozen live view looks just like a sleeping baby. Setting it up with a baby monitor app

It takes about a minute once the camera is in the Tapo app. The Tapo setup guide has the same steps with pictures.

  1. Set the camera up in the Tapo app as usual and connect it to your Wi-Fi.
  2. Create a Camera Account: Tapo app › camera › ⚙ › Advanced Settings › Camera Account. Choose a name and a password (6–32 characters). It's not your TP-Link login.
  3. In Mamoon choose “Wi-Fi camera”. It finds the Tapo on your Wi-Fi by itself; type that name and password.
  4. Aim it at the crib (pan and tilt right from Mamoon) and pick when it should wake you: only crying, crying and fussing, or every sound.

Good to know

Night vision, placement, pan and tilt

All six switch to infrared by themselves when the room goes dark, so you see a sharp black-and-white picture of the crib with the lights off. Put the camera on a shelf or the wall, 3–6 feet from the crib and a little above the mattress, and keep the cord at least 3 feet away, out of reach. Don't aim it through a window: the glass reflects the infrared at night. Pan and tilt work from Mamoon too, so when the baby rolls to the far corner, you follow from bed. More in where to put a baby monitor camera.

Where Mamoon fits: This is what Mamoon is built for. It finds your Tapo C200 on the Wi-Fi by itself, listens for crying on your phone, tells crying from fussing, and wakes you even with the nursery sound muted. No cloud, no account. Sound and cry alerts free forever.

Where the maker's app still wins: two-way talk, recordings and watching from work without a VPN. Mamoon does none of those; it's for the night shift, and both apps can use the camera at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a Tapo C200 as a baby monitor?

Yes. It has infrared night vision, pan and tilt, a microphone and free baby crying detection in the Tapo app. Create a Camera Account in the Tapo app and a baby monitor app like Mamoon can watch it too, with cry alerts that keep coming when your phone is locked.

Tapo C200 or C210 for a nursery?

The C200 is plenty for a crib a few feet away; the C210 adds a 2K picture for a few dollars more, which helps if the camera sits across a large room or you zoom in a lot. Both work the same way with Mamoon. Both connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.

Does the Tapo C220 detect a baby crying?

Yes. TP-Link lists baby crying alerts for the C220 in the Tapo app. Mamoon adds its own listening on your phone, which tells crying from fussing and other sounds and wakes you with the nursery sound muted.

Do I need Tapo Care to use a Tapo as a baby monitor?

No. Live view and baby crying detection work without it, and Mamoon doesn't use it. Tapo Care adds cloud recordings. Note that a Tapo runs only two of Tapo Care, microSD recording and ONVIF at once, so if Mamoon can't see the camera, turn one of them off.

Can I watch a Tapo baby monitor away from home?

In the Tapo app, yes, through TP-Link's servers. Mamoon keeps the video on your Wi-Fi, so away from home it needs a private VPN such as Tailscale.

A video baby monitor you already own

Mamoon turns an old phone or a Wi-Fi camera into a baby monitor. It recognizes a cry by itself, wakes you even with the nursery sound muted, and the picture never leaves your Wi-Fi.
