An Imou camera as a baby monitor

Yes, after one setting. Imou cameras stream on your Wi-Fi like their big sister Dahua, but they ship with a sound format a baby monitor app can't analyze. Switch it once, from a computer, and a Ranger or Rex becomes a full baby monitor with night vision and pan and tilt.

In short
  • Imou works as a baby monitor after one setting. Turn on RTSP in Imou Life, then switch the sound to G.711A in Dahua's free ConfigTool on a computer. About 15 minutes, once.
  • Why the setting: Imou sends AAC sound by default. It plays fine in Imou Life, but a monitor app needs G.711 to listen for crying in real time, and the Imou app has no switch for it.
  • Ranger 2, Ranger 2C, Rex 2D and Rex 3D pan and tilt, from Mamoon too; the Cue 2 and Bullet 2C are fixed. All have infrared night vision.
  • Then Mamoon recognizes the camera as a Dahua, logs in with the safety code from its label, and wakes you only for crying, with your phone locked.

"After the setting" means: once the sound is G.711, the camera is heard in full. Before that, Mamoon shows the picture and says Offline after about 20 seconds rather than pretending to listen.

Why one sound setting decides it

A camera needs three things to work with a baby monitor app: a stream on your own Wi-Fi (RTSP), a picture the phone decodes (H.264) and sound the app can analyze (G.711). Imou has the first two out of the box. The third is AAC, which is great for watching in Imou Life and useless for real-time cry detection. Imou's app doesn't offer the format; Dahua's ConfigTool, which speaks to the same firmware, does. The camera checker explains the three gates with a picture.

Setting it up with a baby monitor app

  1. Turn on RTSP in Imou Life: Imou Life › camera › ⚙ › Advanced › RTSP (the wording varies by model).
  2. On a computer, open Dahua's free ConfigTool, find the camera and set Audio Encode to G.711A. The Imou app has no audio format option; this is the one place it lives.
  3. In Mamoon choose “Wi-Fi camera”. It recognizes Imou as Dahua. User admin, password: the safety code on the camera's label.

Good to know

If you have more Imou or Dahua gear, the IP camera guide covers the Dahua web interface and the stream addresses.

Night vision, placement, pan and tilt

Every Imou in the table switches to infrared in the dark. The Ranger and Rex models turn and tilt from Mamoon over ONVIF, so you can find the baby in any corner from bed; the Cue 2 needs a spot where it sees the whole crib. Put the camera 3–6 feet from the crib, above the mattress, with the cord at least 3 feet away and out of reach. More in where to put the camera.

Where Mamoon fits: This is what Mamoon is built for. It finds your Imou Ranger 2 on the Wi-Fi by itself, listens for crying on your phone, tells crying from fussing, and wakes you even with the nursery sound muted. No cloud, no account. Sound and cry alerts free forever.

Where the maker's app still wins: two-way talk, recordings and watching from work without a VPN. Mamoon does none of those; it's for the night shift, and both apps can use the camera at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an Imou Ranger 2 as a baby monitor?

Yes. It has infrared night vision, pan and tilt and a microphone. To use it with a baby monitor app like Mamoon, turn on RTSP in Imou Life and set the sound to G.711A once in Dahua's ConfigTool; then it works as a full monitor.

Why does my Imou camera show a picture but the app says Offline?

Its sound is still AAC. Mamoon shows the video but can't listen for crying, so after about 20 seconds it says Offline instead of pretending. Set Audio Encode to G.711A in Dahua's ConfigTool and the sound comes through.

What is the Imou RTSP password?

The user is admin and the password is the safety code printed on the camera's label (unless you changed it). Mamoon uses its Dahua preset for Imou, so you only enter those two.

Do I need a computer for this?

Once, yes: the audio format lives only in Dahua's ConfigTool, a free download from Dahua. Everything after that happens on your phone.

A video baby monitor you already own

Mamoon turns an old phone or a Wi-Fi camera into a baby monitor. It recognizes a cry by itself, wakes you even with the nursery sound muted, and the picture never leaves your Wi-Fi.
