- In the Google Home app: live view with night vision, and sound alerts. Google lists smoke and CO alarms, a dog barking, a person talking and loud bangs. Crying isn't among them.
- With a baby monitor app: no. Nest streams only from Google's servers, with keys that expire every 5 minutes. There's no local stream for another app to read.
- Home Assistant can relay it (a one-time US$5 Google developer fee), but the video still comes through Google and stops with the internet.
- What works instead: an old phone by the crib tonight, free, or a Tapo C200 (about $25). Keep the Nest for the rest of the house.
Camera checker: Won't work. Nest sends video only through Google's cloud. Open it in the checker →
What the Google Home app does for a baby
A Nest Cam is a good camera for peeking at a nap from the kitchen: a clear picture, night vision, and you can watch from anywhere. Google's sound detection is real, too: the camera recognizes a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm, alerts when a dog barks or a person speaks, and notices sudden loud events. Google lists sound detection for the Nest Cam (wired), the Nest Cam (battery) when it's wired, and the Nest Cam Indoor (2nd gen), and improves it with a Google Home Premium subscription.
What Google doesn't list is crying. A baby's cry may show up as a generic sound event, but you can't set "wake me only when the baby cries", and Google's page documents no all-night listening mode with your phone locked. It's a home security camera, and it behaves like one.
Can a baby monitor app use a Nest Cam?
| Model | Picture in Mamoon | Hears crying in Mamoon | Night vision (infrared) | Pan & tilt from Mamoon | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nest Cam (indoor, wired) | no | no | yes | fixed camera | no fix on this camera |
| Nest Cam (battery) | no | no | yes | fixed camera | no fix on this camera |
| Nest Cam IQ | no | no | yes | fixed camera | no fix on this camera |
Nest streams come from Google's servers with keys that expire every 5 minutes; current cameras use WebRTC only.
Home Assistant's Nest integration (a one-time US$5 Google developer fee) and go2rtc can relay it, but the video still comes via Google.
- Through a bridge the video still passes the maker's cloud, so it stops with the internet.
So no baby monitor app can show a Nest directly, Mamoon included. The Home Assistant route works for hobbyists, but a monitor that goes dark whenever the internet hiccups isn't one we'd recommend for a nursery.
What works instead
- Tonight, for free: an old phone. Put a spare iPhone or Android by the crib with Mamoon, and it listens for crying on your Wi-Fi and wakes you with your phone locked. See the old phone guide.
- For night vision: a Tapo C200. About $25, infrared, pan and tilt, and a local stream any monitor app can use after one setting. See Tapo C200 as a baby monitor.
- Keep the Nest watching the living room or the door, where Google's alerts fit.
More on the trade-offs in security camera vs baby monitor.
Where Mamoon fits: Nest sends video only through its own cloud, so no other app can read it, ours included. Keep it for the front door. For the crib, an old phone with Mamoon costs nothing to try tonight, or a Tapo C200 (about $25) adds night vision.
To be clear: Mamoon can't use this camera directly, and neither can any other baby monitor app. Its own app still lets you peek from anywhere without a VPN, which Mamoon can't.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a Nest Cam as a baby monitor?
For watching, yes, in the Google Home app with night vision. As a full baby monitor it falls short: Google's sound alerts cover alarms, barking, talking and loud bangs but not crying, and no other baby monitor app can read Nest video.
Does a Nest Cam detect a baby crying?
Google doesn't list crying among the sounds Nest cameras recognize. It lists smoke and CO alarms, a dog barking, a person speaking and sudden loud events.
Can I connect a Nest Cam to a baby monitor app?
Not directly. Nest has no local stream; video comes from Google's servers through Google's Device Access API, with sessions that expire every 5 minutes. Home Assistant can relay it, but it still depends on Google and the internet.
What's a good alternative to a Nest Cam for the nursery?
A TP-Link Tapo C200, about $25, with infrared night vision, pan and tilt and a local stream that baby monitor apps can use. Or an old phone by the crib, free, tonight.
