Which baby monitors need a subscription?

Almost every smart baby monitor now has a plan, and the ads rarely say which features stop working without it. Here is what each one does for free, what sits behind the subscription, how long the free period lasts and what it costs afterwards, checked on the makers' own pages on October 13, 2026.

In short
  • No subscription at all: radio monitors (Infant Optics DXR-8 PRO, Motorola VM75), eufy's Wi-Fi baby monitors, and the one-time apps Baby Monitor 3G ($7.99) and Cloud Baby Monitor ($6.99).
  • Works without a plan, but the extras are paid: Nanit, Owlet, CuboAi, Hubble, Tapo and Philips Avent all show live video for free. History, sleep reports and the smarter alerts are $35–300 a year.
  • Paid to use: Annie ($12.99 a month, or $149.99 for life) and Bibino's video (from $5.99 a month).
  • Nanit without a subscription: yes. Live video, sound and motion alerts, Breathing Motion and two-way audio are free; video history and sleep analysis are not.
  • Mamoon: sound and cry alerts free forever; the picture $29.99 once, for life, or $3.99 a month with 14 days free.

Can you use the Nanit without a subscription?

Yes. Nanit says plainly that "a Nanit Insights plan is not required to use the Nanit Smart Baby Monitor". Without one you still get live HD video, sound and motion notifications, Breathing Motion with Nanit's breathing wear, the room's temperature and humidity, and two-way audio.

What the plan adds is memory. Every new camera starts with three free months of the Sleep plan. After that, Memories ($120 a year) keeps 2 days of continuous video history and 30 days of sleep analysis, and Milestones ($300 a year) keeps 7 days of video and 90 days of sound and motion events. So the honest answer to "does Nanit require a subscription" is: not for watching, only for looking back. Mamoon vs Nanit goes through the features side by side.

What "optional" really means

For most smart monitors "no subscription required" is true, and it can still mislead. The camera keeps working; the feature you chose it for may not.

Before you buy, decide which feature you actually want, and price its plan in for as long as you'll use the monitor.

Baby monitors with no subscription at all

If you never want a renewal reminder, there are three kinds:

Mamoon is a one-time purchase too. The sound and the cry alerts are free forever; the picture is $29.99 once, for life, or $3.99 a month with 14 days free if you only need it for a few months. It turns a phone you already own, or a $25 Tapo camera with night vision, into the camera, and tells a cry from every other sound right on the phone. See how Mamoon works.

To be fair: Mamoon costs more than Cloud Baby Monitor or Baby Monitor 3G. What it adds is cry detection on the phone, Wi-Fi cameras with night vision as the camera, and no account or server. And unlike Bibino or Annie, you pay it once, not every year.

Frequently asked questions

Does Nanit require a subscription?

No. Nanit says an Insights plan is not required: live video, sound and motion alerts, Breathing Motion, temperature and two-way audio work without one. Video history and sleep analysis need a plan.

How much is the Nanit subscription?

After three free months of the Sleep plan, Memories is $120 a year and Milestones $300 a year, billed yearly (Nanit lists them as $10 and $25 a month). Memories keeps 2 days of video history, Milestones 7 days.

Does Owlet require a subscription?

No. Owlet says no subscription is required for the Dream Sock's live readings and notifications. Owlet360, with daily reports and trends, is optional: $9.99 a month after a 7-day trial or $99.99 a year, US only.

Does CuboAi require a subscription?

Not for the basics. Every camera comes with a year of CuboAi Care Premium; after that the free Basic plan keeps live video, cry and cough detection and 3 days of playback, and the AI safety alerts need Premium, from $4.17 a month billed yearly.

Does eufy require a subscription?

No. eufy states its Wi-Fi baby monitors need no subscription for live viewing, cry or motion alerts, two-way audio or night vision, and recordings go to a microSD card.

Does Hubble require a subscription?

Not for live streaming. HubbleClub adds cloud video recording and the sleep diary: Standard $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year, Premium $7.99 a month or $79.99 a year.

Is there a baby monitor with no subscription?

Yes: radio monitors such as the Motorola VM75 and Infant Optics DXR-8 PRO, eufy's Wi-Fi baby monitors, and one-time apps such as Cloud Baby Monitor ($6.99), Baby Monitor 3G ($7.99) and Mamoon ($29.99 for life, sound and cry alerts free).

Does Mamoon have a subscription?

Only if you want one. Sound and cry alerts are free forever. The picture is $29.99 once, for life, or $3.99 a month with the first 14 days free. Only the watching phone pays, and one purchase covers every device on the same Apple or Google account.

A video baby monitor you already own

Mamoon turns an old phone or a Wi-Fi camera into a baby monitor. It recognizes a cry by itself, wakes you even with the nursery sound muted, and the picture never leaves your Wi-Fi.
